A Fresh Look At
True Personal Worship

Make A Joyful Noise
Chuck Abernethy

This last year, the Lord has been impressing upon me the importance of daily personal worship and revealing the benefits that flow when we honor God from our heart. I believe we, as the Body of Christ, are in a season of true heart-felt worship restoration. I would like to encourage you to begin worshiping the Lord daily, not asking Him for anything, but just loving on Him, cherishing, adoring and honoring Him for Who He is and what He has already done for us. Worship is a major key for us in realizing all of Who He is and all of what He has brought us into. We need to understand that worship is the fountain head, or the well spring of all power. I realize that is a huge statement, but one that is proved out to us in Psalm 22:3 stating that He inhabits or is enthroned among the praises of His people - and when His life is brought to the forefront of our lives, we are invigorated, enhanced and inspired in every area - spirit, soul and body.

There is a Greek word for healing in the New Testament that is used quite often in describing Jesus healing the sick. It is the word "therapeuo" which literally means to heal and to cure. However, this word also means to worship, to cherish and to adore (God) and "to wait on" as well. This one word clearly reveals the link between our heart-felt worship and His healing power and life that flow through us as we worship Him. There are soooooooooo many benefits for us to experience through worship. One of the main benefits of worship is that we are ushered into the place of experiencing His glorious presence - what the Scripture calls the beauty of Holiness - Psalm 29:2.

It's important for us to realize that worship is NOT something God needs because our God is not needy and is very complete. However worship is something He desires, because His desire is for intimate relationship and the life that He can impart into ours. On the other hand, worship is absolutely something WE need to be functioning in, as it is the very environment we were created for. Worship is the conduit by which His presence is truly known; His life and power are experienced there, understanding and revelation begin to flow in abundance, and the sweetness of His presence fills us with such peace, serenity, security and hope. It's where we begin to develop in our relationship with Him. It's the very place where we take on His attributes and life. The global church has not fully realized the importance of daily worship in our lives and many have become self-absorbed and no longer understand what it means to give honor. So many see worship as only the warm up to the sermon message on a Sunday morning, but it's so much more than this.

Since we were created to worship, it's important to know that we become just like whatever we worship in life. This fact is clearly stated in Psalm 115 and in verses 3 thru 8 the psalmist is speaking of the futility of idol worship and how lifeless and meaningless they are. Then in verse eight he says: "Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them." What a profound statement. Mankind is constantly worshiping many things. When we worship money and success we become greedy. When we worship the human body, we become lustful. When we worship knowledge we become prideful and arrogant. However, when we begin to daily set time aside to worship God - that act of setting time aside honors Him, and in our worship we begin to take on His attributes.

Look at Galatians 5:22-25 - "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit."

This is describing what He produces in our lives from spending time with Him. Remember: the Holy Spirit is not in heaven, He is right here with us now AND is in each one who is born-again! We do not have a portion of the Holy Spirit, or the Holy Spirit junior... instead we have THE true and complete genuine Holy Spirit. He has come to where we are, and now, through Jesus' work on the cross, we can go to where He is and experience Him whenever we desire. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace... Hebrews 4:16. Oh what a blessed people we are to have this opportunity and privilege to worship and experience Him!!!

Notice in 1 Corinthians 6:19 that it reveals to us that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. We therefore have the privilege to enter into the Holy of Holies, the most Holy place of His presence and experience Him at any time. What a rich treasure we carry about within us - God Himself - The Creator - The Source of all life, wisdom, truth and all power! Oh, what a blessed people we are.

Also, we are encouraged in Galatians 5:25 that if we live in the Spirit that we should also walk in the Spirit. The word "walk" in the Greek means to keep step with, as in military rank. To keep step with Him is to be in consistent fellowship with Him, and there is no better way to accomplish this than through daily personal worship, whereby we experience the beauty of His holiness and presence.

Don't allow your worship to be just religious rote or meaningless routine but instead, let it become alive with His life. Worship from your heart, pour out your love to Him. While worship is not always in song, but can also be a flowing forth of our appreciation that is spoken, we must not neglect to do allow a fresh song from our heart to flow at times. Don't worry about the quality of your vocal abilities just allow a joyful, heart-felt song to flow forth. If you are baptized with the Holy Spirit and have your own prayer language - you can also worship and sing in the Spirit.

Ephesians 5:19-20 - "speaking to one another (yourselves) in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord," The phrase speaking to one another is actually not a good translation of the original language - it should have been translated as "speaking to yourselves" and the King James Version has this translation correct.

Know this: worship is something that you will grow and mature in from this day forward until you go to be with Him and then your worship will soar to new all time heights. Worship is the language of heaven. Worship is always, continually before His Throne. One cannot be in His presence and not worship Him. When you begin to experience Him, your heart will want to worship. Worship perpetuates worship. It's contagious.

As I've been encouraging people to develop a lifestyle of worship, I've encountered so many testimonies of people's lives being changed. Many healing miracles, addictions falling away, bad habits falling away etc. Remember, worship is a grace gift that's been given to the church to bring about the realization of all that's been given to us. His power, His life is released through worship in a mighty way. Fasten your seat belt because you're about to encounter the life you've always desired within. You're about to embark on an amazing journey on the path of Life (Psalm 16:11).

Remember: The Word of God and Worship are meant to work together in our lives!
