Scriptural Foundation
For Healing

"Great Is Thy Faithfulness"
Samuel Tolbert

In the beginning of 1992, I was afflicted with a condition the doctors could not identify. I was suffering everyday with pain and an unidentified infection in my head. The pain was so intense that I cannot accurately begin to describe the depth of what I was suffering with. I was so desperate for relief that I was consuming a whole box of over-the-counter sinus medication every 24 hours just to take the edge off slightly. I eventually was given every antibiotic the doctors could offer but there was none that would bring an end to this horrible condition. During this terrible time of my life, and through much frustration and crying out to the Lord for healing, the Lord walked me through a step-by-step cure for my situation and what would become the foundation for this web site.

I listened intently as He walked me through each block of Scripture showing me where I had been missing it. By implementing this prescription for victory, I was completely healed within just four days. In fact, I still have the last bottle of antibiotics as a testimony and reminder of what was an impossibility with man, became a reality through the Word of God!

I want to clarify that I am not opposed to doctors. I believe they are a gift of God to us, being part of the Grace of God that has been given to man. Every doctor I've talked with admits they are limited in their knowledge and understanding regarding medical science. However, as believer's, we do not have to be limited, as the Grace and Victory of God is unlimited. While it may be a truth that there is no natural cure for your situation, you need to realize there is a higher Truth - The Word of God. Please, do not place a time constraint on your healing, just stay with it until you get the victory, knowing all along that it belongs to you. I've seen some instant miracles and some that were gradual healings. Generally, healing is a gradual process. I sincerely hope and pray that this information will be as much a blessing to you as it was to me.

First Things First!

We must first of all recognize that our healing has already been bought and paid for by the Lord Jesus Christ. It is part of the salvation package that we receive when we are born-again. As you read this well-known passage in Isaiah 53, take special note that the literal Hebrew translation for the word "grief" is actually "sicknesses" and the literal Hebrew translation for the word "sorrows" is actually pains.

Let's take a look at Isaiah 53:4-5

4 Surely He has borne our griefs
(Sicknesses) and carried our
sorrows; (Pains) yet we esteemed
Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

5 But He was wounded for our
transgressions, He was bruised
for our iniquities; The chastisement
for our peace was upon Him,
and by His stripes we are
healed.

Borne = Nasa (Hebrew)
To lift up and remove away from.

Healed = Rapha (Hebrew)
Physical healer, healing, physician
See also Ex. 15:26

Now take a look at the end of verse 12:

12 Therefore I will divide Him a
portion with the great,
and He shall divide the spoil with the strong, because He poured out His soul unto death, and He was numbered with the transgressors,
and He
bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Same word as Verse 4 "NASA"
To lift up and remove away from.

In this wonderful chapter foretelling the Redemptive work of Jesus Christ, we see clearly that the same action of Jesus bearing and removing away our sin in verse 12, by use of the Hebrew word "NASA," also included by the same action, and by use of the same word, that He also bore and removed away our sickness and disease. As you can see, Jesus not only paid the price for the removal or forgiveness of sin, which we are no longer bound by, but also for the healing of our bodies, both mental and physical. There are some who contend that Isaiah 53:4 is speaking of spiritual healing and not physical. I like to remind them that when we were born-again we were not spiritually healed, but our spirit was re-created and therefore we have become a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." That's why this next Scripture is so exciting!

Matthew confirms our physical healing as our right in Matthew 8:16-17
as he makes reference to Isaiah 53:4

16 When evening had come, they
brought to Him many who were
demon-possessed. And He cast
out the spirits with a word, and
healed all who were sick,

17 that it might be fulfilled which
was spoken by Isaiah the prophet,
saying: "He Himself took our infirmities
and bore our sicknesses."

Notice He healed "all" who came,
He turned none away!

The early church clearly understood what Jesus came to do for us on the cross, fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy. Peter writes regarding this fact as past tense saying: "By whose stripes you were healed" - 1 Peter 2:24. Know this: Jesus Christ went to the cross spirit, soul and body to purchase our wholeness, spirit, soul and body!

When I was dealing with this severe illness, there was one question that I kept bringing up to the Lord: "When are you going to heal me?" On one particular day I was so frustrated and tired of this on-going battle, that I once again blurted out that same question, and I might add my attitude was not too good either, but like a shot the Lord replied with a question of His own: "When are YOU going to believe that I already did!" His response really caught my attention. I was the one holding up my healing, not Him! What I discovered was that I had been looking for a future work of His Grace, and what I actually needed to do was take hold of what had already been provided, which was the finished work of Grace at Calvary. You see, we must look back to get ahead! Real faith takes hold of what has already been revealed and acts upon it. Let's quit looking for a "future" work of healing and take hold of what has already been given to us!

Romans 10:6-8 reveals this important fact.

6 But the righteousness of faith speaks
in this way, "Do not say in your heart,
'Who will ascend into heaven?' "
(that is, to bring Christ down from above)

7 or, " 'Who will descend into the abyss?' "
(that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).

8 But what does it say? "The word is near
you, in your mouth and in your heart"
(that is, the word of faith which we preach):

He already came down!
He's already been raised up!

The above Scripture confirms what I just said and is telling us to stop looking for another work of Grace. Jesus already came to Earth, paid the price and the solution is right there with you now!!! Believe it in your heart, and let your affirming words speak it out of your mouth. To say words like, "I believe the Lord is going to heal me someday." Is, according to this scripture, the same as saying, "I need the Lord to come down from heaven and to be beaten and whipped and be led to the cross to be crucified again and to be raised up for my present ailment." We would not consciously say such a thing, but that is what we are doing when we neglect the finished work of Calvary and look to a future work. We need to understand that the work of the cross was good enough for any and all of our needs, as the Lord said to Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9, "My Grace is sufficient for you!" If you do a study on grace, you will find that His grace is His empowerment which has been given to us. In essence the Lord was saying to Paul, "All that I have and all that I am has already been given to you - stand on it Paul, put the Word to work!!!" That's exactly what we need to do as well.

Continuing in Romans chapter 10, Paul tells us that faith for healing must be active in two places, both in our mouth and in our heart. According to the Scripture, if we are believing only without our words declaring our belief, we are operating at a 50% deficit in regards to our faith. Psalm 107:2 reminds us of this by saying: "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy." That's us!!! Also, remember in the Book of James it warns us against having our heart and mouth divided, speaking and believing two different things - it calls that kind of person double-minded and warns us not to expect a thing if we operate in that realm - James 1:6-8.

Let's take a look at Romans 10:9-13

9 that if you confess with your
mouth the Lord Jesus and believe
in your heart that God has raised Him
from the dead, you will be saved.

10 For with the heart one believes
unto righteousness,and with the mouth
confession; is made unto salvation.

11 For the Scripture says,
"Whoever believes on Him will not
be put to shame."

12 For there is no distinction
between Jew and Greek, for the same
Lord over all is rich to all who call
upon Him.

13 For "whoever calls on the name of
the LORD shall be saved."

Heart and Mouth
believing and speaking the same thing
The Word!

In the above Scripture, take special note of the word "Saved" and "Salvation" in the above block of Scripture. It is the word "sozo" in the Greek language which has the meaning of: to save, that is, to deliver or protect, to heal, preserve, be (make) whole. Jesus used this very word every time He healed someone saying: "Your faith has made you whole." Or "be made whole." Whenever we read this word in the Bible we need to read it as saved/healed! It has the combined meaning just as Isaiah spoke of it in chapter 53. You can not separate healing out of Redemption, for they are one in the same. If you are saved, then you have the right to health, they are synonymous with one another.

Let's take a look at some further proof that health and healing belong to us as a free gift of grace through the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ at Calvary.

Galatians 3:13-14 is a Scripture that is so very important!

13 Christ has redeemed us from the
curse of the law, having become a curse
for us (for it is written, "Cursed is
everyone who hangs on a tree"),

14 that the blessing of Abraham might
come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus,
that we might receive the promise of the
Spirit through faith.

Redeemed = Exagarazo (Greek)
To buy up, to rescue from loss.

The word "redeemed" in this verse, has the thought of being "brought out," or purchased out from underneath the weight of the oppression of the curse of the law. This is wonderful news for us because we can clearly see the will of God toward us in verse 14, and with this new understanding we could read it this way: "that we, being free from the curse would enjoy the blessings which is the promise of the Spirit of God through faith!" Isn't that good. Are you ready, things are about to get even more exciting!

Do you know what the curse of the law is? Or where it's found in the Bible? You can not appreciate the full impact of this truth that's laid out in the above Scriptures until you do. The curse of the law is found in Deuteronomy chapter 28. The first 14 verses of the chapter describe the blessings that will come upon a believer's life through obedience to the Lord. Verses 15 through 68 describe the curse, or the problems and hardships that one can expect who, through disobedience, walks outside of the covenant relationship with the Lord. Even though this section of Scripture is terrible indeed, you should read it with a glad heart and rejoice that you've been redeemed from from the curse - yes, hallelujah - it's a real reason to celebrate and praise the Lord! But, there is one section here that is of particular importance to us regarding health. Get ready to shout!

We need to pay close attention to Deuteronomy 28:58-61

58 "If you do not carefully observe all
the words of this law that are written in
this book, that you may fear this glorious
and awesome name,
THE LORD YOUR GOD,

59 then the LORD will bring upon you
and your descendants extraordinary plagues
--great and prolonged plagues--
and serious and prolonged sicknesses.

60 Moreover He will bring back on you all
the diseases of Egypt, of which you were
afraid, and they shall cling to you.

61 Also every sickness and every plague,
which is not written in this book of the law,
will the LORD bring upon you until you are
destroyed.

All inclusive of
every sickness and disease!

Did you see it? Every sickness and every disease, even those NOT written in this Book of the Law! This includes the sickness and disease YOU are dealing with right now and is inclusive of every sickness and every disease that was, is, or can ever be!!!

Now let's tie it all together. Since we know that the curse includes all sickness and all disease that's in the world, we can clearly see that according to Galatians 3:13, we have been redeemed or bought out from underneath the lordship of the curse of the law. Therefore, according to these Scriptures, you can clearly see that sickness and disease have no legal right to live within our bodies. According to the Word of God it's illegal - pure and simple, because we have been redeemed!!! It's our birth-right as born-again children of God to be free of sickness and disease. Praise the Lord! Take a moment and really ponder, and take to heart this crucial life-giving fact.

Go ahead and get happy about the blessing that is yours and get mad at the devil for trying to pull one over on you, trying to get you to accept what doesn't belong to you. He's a liar! Remember this: Faith can only act where the will of God is known. You can't claim a benefit that you don't know anything about. But now you know! So put your foot down on the devil and command him to leave and take all of his sickness and disease with him, it doesn't belong to you!!! As it says in John 8:32: "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." You're free! You've been made free of sickness and disease!!!

It's vitally important for us to realize that we have an active role to play in appropriating our blessings. You see, there's an enemy out there that is continually working against us. However. we need to understand that because we have become born-again, we have been given authority over the devil and all his works.

In Luke 10:19-20 there's a great truth describing our covenant right:
Jesus said...

19 Behold, I give you the authority
to trample on serpents and scorpions,
and over all the power of the enemy,
and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this,
that the spirits are subject to you, but
rather rejoice because your names are
written in heaven."

Now that's power!!!
And it's your God given right
to act upon it.
.

Did you know that we have been given the right to use His authority over the enemy? And as if Verse 19 didn't say it clear enough, Jesus clarifies it even futher in Verse 20 when He said - the spirits are subject to you!!! What Jesus was really saying in Verse 20; knowing He was about to pay the price for redemption was: "don't just rejoice in this one area of the blessing that I've made available to you, that the spirits are subject to you - there's more, much more and it is yours BECAUSE you're a child of God having been born-again and your names are written in heaven - you are in My family now with all of its rights and privileges, and everything that I've made available to you stems from this. This is what you should be rejoicing about"

Child of God, you can do this! You have the right, given by the Lord Jesus Himself. Go ahead and take your authority over the devil by commanding him to get out of your life and out of all that concerns you. Command sickness and disease to go! Rebuke it in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Set your will against it, and refuse to accept it on the basis of the Word of God and the shed Blood at Calvary - it doesn't belong to you. You are a Blood bought child of God, so exercise your right!

Did you know that your words are powerful and carry great impact and that your faith is much more stronger than you think or are aware of? Your words are containers that release the blessing of God into your life.

Look what else Jesus said in Mark 11:22-23

22 So Jesus answered and said to them,
"Have faith in God.

23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever
says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be
cast into the sea,' and does not doubt
in his heart, but believes that those things
he says will come to pass, he will have
whatever he says.

Jesus said you can
have whatever
you say!

A mountain is an obstacle in life that is blocking your progress or realized blessing! Notice, Jesus did not say to talk to God about your mountain - He said YOU do something about it - use the faith He has given to you and command it to be removed according to the Word of God. That's right - You do it!!! Pick up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the spoken Word of God, and begin to slash your way to victory, proclaiming the Word of God regarding your healing.

Often, when we are sick or dealing with disease, we "hear" the sickness or symptoms speak negativity or doubt to our minds. Thoughts come to us telling us we are not ever going to get well, or "how will you ever get about your business, you're in such bad shape." Or quite possibly convincing us to entertain thoughts of death, suicide or thoughts of total defeat because of the pain or symptoms. Do not listen to that, it will defeat you! Instead, get back to the Word and activate your faith.

Take a look at Isaiah 54:17 for a word from the Lord regarding this.

17 No weapon formed against you
shall prosper, And every tongue which
rises against you in judgment You shall
condemn. This is the heritage of the
servants of the LORD, And their
righteousness is from Me," Says the LORD.
You take the authority over
those negative thoughts with the Word!

Did you notice the "You" in this Scripture? Here again, the Lord is telling you to do something about this, He's telling you to take action against it and for you to condemn it.

After reading all that I've presented so far, you must realize by now that according to the Word of the Lord, sickness is judging you falsely. Remember, it's illegal for it to be in your body. It has no right to be there. Rise up in faith and condemn those lying negative thoughts with the truth of the Word of God. Refuse to accept that negativity! Instead, replace those negative thoughts by meditating on the promises of health and healing from the Word. Saturate your mind with the truth which is your inheritance, your birthright - The Word Of God! Begin to see yourself as the Word says - healed, whole and well! Begin to speak out what the Word says about you: "According to the Word of God - I'm healed by the stripes placed upon Jesus' back. Healing is mine and I have it now no matter what I see, or how I feel, it's a gift of His grace, it's my position in Him - I am the healed, I am not the sick - thank you Lord!" I strongly suggest that you read through our healing scripture page and take hold of the scriptures that stand out to you and put your name in them and make them personal speaking them out over yourself a couple of times per day until you are convinced.

We do not deny that sickness or disease is present - however, we are denying it the right to stay in our bodies, by receiving the truth of what was purchased for us at Calvary - which is our covenant blessing!

When you finally come to the place when you are ready to make up your mind to receive your healing by faith, write down that date and settle it before the Lord in prayer. Not the date you want to see the manifestation take place in your flesh, but the day that you are going to put your faith to work to believe that He has already provided your healing. From that day forward you will no longer ask the Lord for healing, instead you will now thank Him and praise Him for it. This is where the battle begins as the enemy will attempt to talk you out of it in the days to come, trying to convince you that it didn't work or it's not for you. You may even hear him say, "oh sure, it worked for Dan Downey, but your different, your not like him, it won't work the same for you." Don't you believe that lie, the Bible tells us over and over that God shows no favoritism - He treats all His children the same - He is an equal opportunity God! You must stand strong in faith and must not give in. When the enemy says you are not going to get healed, you can now state with complete confidence and even have a little fun with it by saying, "Yes, your right devil, I'm not going to receive my healing, because on this date devil, I've already received my healing by faith - you're just too late! It's mine now!!!"

In Mark chapter 4 there is a block of Scripture that many of us are familiar with, it's the parable of the sower. As Jesus was explaining this parable of the sower to His disciples, He revealed in verse 15 that when the Word of God is sown into a persons life, the devil comes immediately with the intent to steal the Word. Obviously the devil knows how powerful and fruitful the Word of God can be!

Mark 4:15 reads:

15 And these are the ones by the
wayside where the word is sown.
When they hear, Satan comes
immediately and takes away the
word that was sown in their hearts.
Does not want the
Word to take root and bear fruit.

We know that in the first part of John 10:10, Jesus said that the devil (the thief) comes to steal and to kill and to destroy. This is his goal and focus. Notice that he is very wise in his tactics against us. He knows that if we continue to meditate or focus on the Word of God, it will bring forth fruit, through faith, just as it states in Romans 10:17 when it says that faith comes through hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

The devil knows this is a factual truth, that when the Word is received, it will always produce. So, he attempts to bring something other than the Word for us to focus on, which is his word of doubt, confusion and uncertainty. He attempts to get our focus onto our circumstances instead of the promises of the Word. The Lord told me that we need to use the devil's tactics against him, and walk in at least the same amount of wisdom he uses against us. When we begin to hear that thought of doubt, or begin to focus in on our problem, we need to immediately steal that lying thought and not allow it to take root and immediately replace it with the truth of the Word of God. This is why you need to have your healing Scriptures at the ready.

Use those thoughts of doubt and wondering as a "cue" to speak the Word concerning the promises of health. By doing that, you will steal or stop the devil's word from taking root. Don't hesitate - do it immediately and as often as you need to throughout the day. It's powerful and it works! After all, the enemy has been using this on humanity since the beginning and unfortunately, has been quite successful. It's time for us to rise up and turn the tide! Boldly proclaim that you are a recipient of God's grace and of the promise of health. Rebuke that lying devil and rebuke those circumstances and claim your promise of health. Decree out loud "I am healed because the Word says so! I believe it and it's mine now!"

When the Lord spoke this truth to me, I literally did this about 30 times the first day, proclaiming who I am in Christ and my covenant rights. I did it when I was driving, when I was in the shower, when I was at work, yes, even when I was in bed. Each time I caught my mind beginning to wonder why I wasn't healed, or reminding me of how great the pain was - I caught myself and began to proclaim what the Word says regarding my healing and blessing. I stole the devil's negative, doubting seeds and replaced them immediately with the truth of the Word of the Living God, over and over again. As the days passed by, I also noticed that I wasn't having to do this as much as the previous day - the symptoms were not as great - progress was taking place.

Let's take a look at how the Lord sees us and get a firm understanding of our position, or right standing, in Christ. Many in the Body of Christ see themselves as "weak worms of the dust," and, because of that mentality, they are an easy target for the enemy. Once you get a hold of where you stand in Christ, your life will take on a whole new brightness of hope. You won't have to try and get your faith up, faith will just be!

Let's start in Ephesians 2:4-6

4 But God, who is rich in mercy,
because of His great love with which
He loved us,

5 even when we were dead in
trespasses, made us alive together
with Christ (by grace you have
been saved),

6 and raised us up together, and made
us sit together in the heavenly places
in Christ Jesus,

Through Grace we're raised up
and seated together with Jesus Christ

Did you see that? When we were born-again we were positionally raised up and made to sit together with Jesus. The Father sees us in Christ, in His family, and we have been given the position, or right of "sonship." As it states in Romans 8:17: "we are heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ." That means all that He has, has already been given to us! Now look at the end of the preceding chapter in Ephesians. Get ready, this is very exciting!

Ephesians 1:19-23

19 and what is the exceeding greatness
of His power toward us who believe,
according to the working of His mighty
power

20 which He worked in Christ when He
raised Him from the dead and seated Him
at His right hand in the heavenly places,

21 far above all principality and power
and might and dominion, and every
name that is named, not only in this age
but also in that which is to come.

22 And He put all things under His feet,
and gave Him to be head over all things
to the church,

23 which is His body, the fullness of Him
who fills all in all.

The seat of Authority!

If it's under His feet, then
it's under our feet, because we are
The Body of Christ!

This starts out talking about Jesus' work of redemption and the resurrection, or what we call the New Birth. But remember in Ephesians 2:6 it said we are raised up and seated with Jesus and here in verse 20 it is speaking of this very seat. I like to call this the "Seat of Authority" because of what it says next. Verse 21 tells us He is far above, not just above, but FAR above all principality and power and might and dominion (everything and every power the devil has) and also far above every name that can be named! Cancer is a name, diabetes is a name, arthritis is a name, pain is a name, whatever your condition is, it's got a name! And according to Ephesians 2:6, we've been raised up with Jesus Christ above it all! Do you see it? Because we are in Christ, we are positionally seated in that very Seat of Authority with Jesus. That's the authority we have now, here on the Earth, right where we are! Stay with me on this. This is going to transform the way you see yourself from now on.

Now look at verse 22, "He put all things under His feet." Now let me ask you a very simple question: Where are the feet? They are on the very lowest part of the Body, of course. The rest of this chapter tells us that the Body is the Church - hey, that's us! We are the Body of Christ and if they are under His feet then they are all under our feet. Praise the Lord! Do you see that we have been given a very great inheritance indeed! Begin to exercise your authority in Christ by boldly proclaiming what rightly belongs to you by faith. Don't allow the devil to steal from you any longer. Get fed up and put your foot down on the situation and receive by faith the blessings that are yours!

Look at this exciting section of Scripture in 1 John 5:14-15

14 Now this is the confidence that
we have in Him, that if we ask anything
according to His will, He hears us.

15 And if we know that He hears us,
whatever we ask, we know that we
have the petitions that we have asked
of Him.

Surely this includes healing!

The Word of God is the Will of God

God's Word is His will. Take it, it's yours!!!

Now proceed on to the listing of healing scriptures - which is your inheritance! Meditate on them, focus in on them. Begin to see yourself in the light of the promises of God. See yourself as the Word says you are! The Lord paid an extremely high price for you to enjoy the benefit of them all. Do not speak your problem, but begin to speak the answer and watch your situations change!!!
