The High Life

Hymn Medley
Luther Allman

Recently, I was speaking with a man who said he was impressed with how much scripture I had on the inside of me. He remarked to me, "I just can't seem to memorize scripture, I've tried but I just can't seem to get any of them to stick with me." I asked him if he liked any sports. "Oh yes, I love baseball!" So I asked him if he could tell me anything about how the teams were doing and if he knew any of the statistics? "Oh, I can tell you anything you want to know about it!" I smiled and said, "Oh, really. It seems to me that your memory works just fine, wouldn't you say?!" You see, the problem with this man is very common to many Christians, the Word of God has not yet become life to him.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:21; "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Many of us when we read this verse think of finances or wealth as the treasure. But treasure is anything that you ascribe value to. In this man's case, baseball was his treasure, it was where his heart was. Not that there is anything wrong with following sports, but when it takes precedence over your love for the Lord and His Word, then you're out of balance.

I love what Proverbs 4:20-22 has to say about this very thing; "20 My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; 22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh."

Take a look at verse 22, it says that the Word is life to those that find it. Notice it doesn't say that the Word is life to all, to those with a casual gaze, instead it becomes life to those with a serious intent, who are focused upon it. It becomes life to those who take the time to dig in and locate His precepts, cherish them and take them to heart for the precious promises of God that they truly are. The Word of God is life. That's what it is. The blessing is there, contained within just waiting for someone to come along and take hold of it, to internalize it and grab on to it with the arms of faith and not let go!

Let's take a look at the first part of the above block of Scripture in Proverbs. It describes a person who is proactive and purposeful with the Word. Verse 21 reveals a person who recognizes the worth and riches contained within the Word, a person who has internalized the Word and has allowed it to sink down deep into their heart. This is a person who has set aside time everyday to read, research, ponder and meditate (chew) on the Word of God. And the result is that the Word becomes life, His life manifested to them and it even effects their physical body becoming health, or as the original Hebrew language says, becomes medicine to all of their flesh. Total wholeness.

In John 14:6 Jesus said;"I am the way, the truth and the life..." Now let me ask you a question; who is Jesus? Yes, He is the Messiah, the Son of God, the King of kings and Lord of lords. But, if you look at the book of John, chapter one, you will find that He is the living Word of God. See also Revelation 19:13. So, it would be safe to read the same verse in this manner: "The Word of God is the way, the truth and the life."

The Word "life" in the original Greek language, is the word "zoe." And in the above verse it literally means: Life that is the highest and best of which Christ is. Wow! Now that's living. Jesus doesn't have any sickness or disease, no poverty, fear or depression. Those things cannot stand in His presence. He is the purest form of all that is good. The purest of the pure, the best of the best!

Now let's take a look at John 10:10: "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I (Jesus) have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly (super-abundance)."

There it is again - the word zoe. Jesus is saying, I have come that you would share in and partake of My life, which is the highest and best of all that I have to offer, and that you would experience it to the fullest sense. Make no mistake about it - this is the will of God for you! Oh, get this down deep into your spirit! The Word of God is life, and it is His will that you experience it in the here and now! He's just waiting for someone to believe it, receive it and act upon it so that He can bring it to pass in their life.

Hebrews 4:12 proves this by telling us that the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than a two edged sword. Hallelujah! There is nothing that the life of the Word cannot deal with. It will cut out sickness and disease and give you health. It will cut out poverty and bring you into abundance. It will cut out depression and anger and strife and bring you peace and love and joy. It will cut out hopelessness and give you a purpose and expectancy once again. It will cut out failure and give you success. It will cut out the old ways of your life and give you newness of life - life to the full!

Jesus said in Matthew 4:4; "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." Did you see it? Your survival depends upon it. It is the prescribed way, designated by the Lord Himself, for the born-again believer to thrive upon the earth. It needs to be taken in daily, just as natural food, if we are going to lead healthy Christian lives. The Word of God is not just a "religious" book, it is life, the very life of God given to man for success in life, and it is not to be underestimated or neglected, it is to be highly treasured and esteemed for the precious life of which it is. It is living, and when it is internalized, it germinates within your spirit and brings forth a harvest of blessing. It will heal your past, cause you to flourish in your present moment, and provide for your future.

Yes, know this, and get it down deep into your spirit - the Word of God is life! And it is necessary for quality Christian living. You will not experience the extent of the blessing that the Lord wants you to have without it. There is no other way. Do not let it slip away from you. Get back into the Word and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the freshness of the Life of God to you, ask Him to help you fall in love with it and He will! As you begin to develop the image of the Word on the inside, it won't be long before you'll be living the High Life!
